Description

We are delighted to invite all students and postdocs in the School of Biological Sciences and the Roslin Institute to an half-day workshop exploring scientific impact, in all its many and varied forms. This workshop will introduce what impact is, how to identify ways in which your research can have impact, and how to be alert to opportunities that will allow impact to be made. The programme is given below.

The workshop will also give participants a head start in preparing their submisisons for the Impact competition that will be run over the summer. All students and postdocs in the School and at the Roslin Institute will be invited to submit a short desciption of the ways in which their own research could generate impact in the future, with the chance to win £££ !

Provisional programme

  • 9.30 - 10.00 am
  • Introduction to impact in its many and varied forms - Heather Rea (Institute for Academic Development, University of Edinburgh)
  • 10.00 - 10.30 am
  • Discussion of good and bad Pathways to Impact submissions in groups and feedback - Carolyn Brock (Edinburgh Research and Innovation, UoE)
  • 10.30 - 11.00 am
  • Coffee, including time for attendees to prepare short summary of their research to share with other participants in discussion section (see below)
  • 11.00 - 11.45 am
  • Presentations by researchers who submitted Impact Case Studies to the Research Ecellence Framework, describing how they initially envisioned their research and how they took it along the path that led to impact
  • 11.00 - 11.15 am: Sara Knott (Institute of Evolutionary Biology, UoE)
  • 11.15 - 11.30 am: David Cavanagh (Inst. of Immunology and Infection Res, UoE)
  • 11.30 - 11.45 am: Francisca Mutapi (Inst. of Immunology and Infection Res, UoE)

  • Introduction to Excellence with Impact competition
  • 11.55 - 12.25 pm
